Stephanie Garber you've done it again！ I'm absolutely in love with this book and will tell everyone how amazing it is！ I can't say I love it more than Caraval （I'm still obsessed over the magic of Caraval）， but it's definitely right up there with it！ While I was never team Jacks， I did still enjoy reading about him and this book was definitely an enjoyable journey with a lot more of him added in！ I also love Evangeline Fox and her curious， big heart。 （Even though I want to strangle her sometimes Stephanie Garber you've done it again！ I'm absolutely in love with this book and will tell everyone how amazing it is！ I can't say I love it more than Caraval （I'm still obsessed over the magic of Caraval）， but it's definitely right up there with it！ While I was never team Jacks， I did still enjoy reading about him and this book was definitely an enjoyable journey with a lot more of him added in！ I also love Evangeline Fox and her curious， big heart。 （Even though I want to strangle her sometimes for being so gullible。 Loa）If you've never read Caraval， I definitely recommend reading it first！ However， you should definitely hurry because this books come out September 28th and it is a must read！For those who don't know， genre is YA Fantasy。 Also， her books are very clean which I absolutely love！ 。。。more

As always， I want to thank Netgallery， Hodder & Stoughton and Stephanie Garber for providing me with a ARC of Once Upon a Broken Heart in exchange for an honest review。 The review will not go to deep into the plot but will be updated once the book is released。 I have to admit I was late to the Caraval Trilogy but instantly was hooked！ When I learned that Garber was coming out with a new book I was incredibly excited。 Garber manages to perfectly blend wonderful world building， interesting charact As always， I want to thank Netgallery， Hodder & Stoughton and Stephanie Garber for providing me with a ARC of Once Upon a Broken Heart in exchange for an honest review。 The review will not go to deep into the plot but will be updated once the book is released。 I have to admit I was late to the Caraval Trilogy but instantly was hooked！ When I learned that Garber was coming out with a new book I was incredibly excited。 Garber manages to perfectly blend wonderful world building， interesting characters， romance and elegant writing style to create a marvellous and enchanting fairy tale-esque story that kept me captivated throughout。 I will admit at first， I was fearful it would fall into the ‘evil-step family’ trope to heavily and that the main protagonist would be seemingly perfect。 Thankfully， this was not the case。 None of the characters are overtly good or bad – well maybe some are - but carry with them， as nearly people all do， a mixture of both。 The real thing that hooked me in was the beautiful writing style used to tell the story。 The prose flowed in such an enchanting way that the tone suited the genres incredibly well。 All in all the book was fantastic， the genres blended perfectly， the world seemed believable and well rounded， the characters are believable （despite the fairy-tale setting） and the story keeps you engaged。 I would highly recommend to any Garber fan or fan of fantasy or modern fairy tales。 。。。more

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review。I adored this story， as a huge fan of the Caraval series， I was so excited to dive into this world again and it did not disappoint。 The story takes place in the mystical north where the line between fairytale and history is blurred。 As usual， Stephanie Garber does an excellent job of making the reader feel apart of the world with attention to every detail， especially the fashion which I've Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review。I adored this story， as a huge fan of the Caraval series， I was so excited to dive into this world again and it did not disappoint。 The story takes place in the mystical north where the line between fairytale and history is blurred。 As usual， Stephanie Garber does an excellent job of making the reader feel apart of the world with attention to every detail， especially the fashion which I've always loved。 Once Upon a Broken Heart is a beautifully written fast-paced adventure， with so many plot twists it was hard to tell where the story would lead you （in the best way possible）。 The characters were so well written， I couldn't help but feel I knew them personally and how they would react in each situation。 I would recommend reading the original trilogy to start with as this book does spoil the Caraval series， but if you already love the world of Caraval， this book does not disappoint， I cannot wait for the next installment to see where Evangeline and Jacks pick up。 Overall， this was a beautifully written， magical read that left me heartbroken that the sequel isn't out yet and is one of my top reads of the year！ Definitely pick this up if your are a fan of magic， mystery and romance。 。。。more

A carousel of magic， mystery and curses！I’ve made it no secret that the Caraval series is one of my favourites of all time。 The setting， the magic and the world building are phenomenal and it’s so atmospheric。 When I heard about Once Upon a Broken Heart， I was excited， but also nervous。 Caraval has a special place in my heart and I worried if this let me down， it would taint that love for Caraval。Luckily， it did quite the opposite。From the moment I opened the book， I felt like I was home。 The no A carousel of magic， mystery and curses！I’ve made it no secret that the Caraval series is one of my favourites of all time。 The setting， the magic and the world building are phenomenal and it’s so atmospheric。 When I heard about Once Upon a Broken Heart， I was excited， but also nervous。 Caraval has a special place in my heart and I worried if this let me down， it would taint that love for Caraval。Luckily， it did quite the opposite。From the moment I opened the book， I felt like I was home。 The nostalgia was immediate and it took my right back to the days where I secretly binged Caraval in the store room of the library because I couldn’t bear to have to put it down。I will say this， don’t expect something drastically different to Caraval。 I feel like that goes without saying since the Fates are still involved and it’s in the same world but I feel like some people will still find a way to berate the fact that it bears similarities when honestly， I love the continuity of it！Jacks is back， and crueller than ever。 Evangeline Fox is the perfect mix of Scarlett and Donatella， and I can think of no better match for the fates。I love that the Caraval series focusses a lot on finding love， and Garber has delved into the collateral damage that occurs to those left behind or lose who simply never find their love。 Heartbreak is a huge theme and there were many moments when my heart broke for these characters。I feel like there was one oddity in the plot。 For someone from Valenda who loves history and fairytales so much I was surprised that Evangeline never mentioned Caraval at all， even in passing。 Especially since she’s familiar with who Scarlett and Tella are。 It definitely didn’t dampen the book at all， it was just something I found strange！I’m so excited to see where this series will go！ 。。。more

Where do I even begin with this review？ I literally just finished this and feel the frantic need to get all of my thoughts out before anything slips away！！First off， thank you so much to Stephanie Garber for the early copy！ I am still starstruck that I won a giveaway for this ARC！Right off the bat， I loved Evangeline。 If you’ve read the Caraval trilogy， I thought Evangeline was a really great blend of Scarlett and Tella。 While there were many times throughout the book I was shouting （both in my Where do I even begin with this review？ I literally just finished this and feel the frantic need to get all of my thoughts out before anything slips away！！First off， thank you so much to Stephanie Garber for the early copy！ I am still starstruck that I won a giveaway for this ARC！Right off the bat， I loved Evangeline。 If you’ve read the Caraval trilogy， I thought Evangeline was a really great blend of Scarlett and Tella。 While there were many times throughout the book I was shouting （both in my head and out loud） WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS？！ It was all very on brand for her character and I respected her staying true to herself and doing what she believed to be the right thing。 Next up: Jacks。 I love him。 I love him。 I。 Love。 Him。 He stole the show for me in Legendary。 I fell so hard for this Prince who was incapable of love and always hoped he would get his own story and maybe even a happily ever after。 I loved him just as much in this book and am so looking forward to the next！This book was filled with all the magic and whimsy and wonder that I come to expect from a Stephanie Garber book。 It was unputdownable。 I literally could not make my eyes stop reading LOL。I adored the Caraval trilogy （Legendary was my fav） and I adored this one even more！ I’m looking forward to all the finished copies I’ve preordered and am desperately wishing I could read the next book as it’s being written。 For now， I’ll pass the time waiting by rereading。 。。。more

I actually never finished Caraval - I wasn't enjoying it so I put it down。 However， Once Upon A Broken Heart has blown me away so much that I'm now definitely going back to read the series！There were mentions of events and characters that I assume were from Caraval， but I found not having read that series didn't affect my enjoyment of this book at all！ Evangeline makes an ill fated deal with Jacks， the Prince of Hearts which sees her off on a non stop adventure full of intrigue and action （and m I actually never finished Caraval - I wasn't enjoying it so I put it down。 However， Once Upon A Broken Heart has blown me away so much that I'm now definitely going back to read the series！There were mentions of events and characters that I assume were from Caraval， but I found not having read that series didn't affect my enjoyment of this book at all！ Evangeline makes an ill fated deal with Jacks， the Prince of Hearts which sees her off on a non stop adventure full of intrigue and action （and maybe a little bit of seduction。。。）I'm very excited for the next book in the series to see how it all unfolds！I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I want to start by saying that this is a standalone series from the Caraval trilogy and while you do not need to read them before this book， I do recommend doing so as there are references within this book back to the trilogy but not enough so that you would be confused。 I found it helpful to reread the Caraval series to refamiliarize myself with the magic system and world building。This book is centered around the Prince of Hearts， Jacks， who is a fate and just like the title suggests there is g I want to start by saying that this is a standalone series from the Caraval trilogy and while you do not need to read them before this book， I do recommend doing so as there are references within this book back to the trilogy but not enough so that you would be confused。 I found it helpful to reread the Caraval series to refamiliarize myself with the magic system and world building。This book is centered around the Prince of Hearts， Jacks， who is a fate and just like the title suggests there is going to be a broken heart here and there。 A morally grey villain （or is he actually evil and we choose to overlook it） gets our sweet Evangeline trapped within a deal with him and thus the entanglement between the two begin。The world that this author has created remains to be strong and filled with so many details that creates an atmospheric and magical read。 I love how the pure goodness of our heroine is counteracted by the wickedness of The Prince of Hearts， it creates a romance that can only end in one way。 I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and really cannot wait for the next one to be written so I can jump right back into this world。 。。。more

“There was something fantastically bewitching about the idea that a person’s destiny could change in one single， wondrous night。”Once Upon a Broken Heart is the beginning of a new story set in the world first introduced in the Caraval trilogy （which you don’t have to read to understand this novel but I highly recommend that you do）。 It is defined by Stephanie Garber’s signature YA fairytale style — you know， the one where scents and tastes smell and taste like emotions and vice verse; where you “There was something fantastically bewitching about the idea that a person’s destiny could change in one single， wondrous night。”Once Upon a Broken Heart is the beginning of a new story set in the world first introduced in the Caraval trilogy （which you don’t have to read to understand this novel but I highly recommend that you do）。 It is defined by Stephanie Garber’s signature YA fairytale style — you know， the one where scents and tastes smell and taste like emotions and vice verse; where you can never predict the ending， and where the characters have the coolest names。 Be it Scarlett， Donatella or Evangeline， Garber’s protagonists always manage to get themselves into the craziest adventures — like staying dead for a couple of days in Caraval in the hope of winning the game。 Here， no less impossible things are possible。 Take Jacks， the Prince of Hearts。 My notes on him while reading included “okaaay， Jacks” （p。21 if you’re curious） and “Jacks， my man。。。 goodness” （p。 332）。 I was happy to see him back， which， to be honest， I hadn’t expected （being happy about his return， that is）。 Hear me out！ When it was Legend vs Jacks， come on， I rooted for Legend。 In Once Upon a Broken Heart， I’m rooting for Jacks — despite him being a Fate and his usual （weeeell， yes and no） Fate ways。 On the final note， you know how you should avoid judging a book by its cover？ Not in this case。 The cover is absolutely gorgeous， yes， but so is the story inside， as well as the way the text’s presented， with all the little notes and other things that I don’t want to spoil。 Once Upon a Broken Heart is my favourite Stephanie Garber novel after Caraval。 Funny， sad， unpredictable。 It has been a real pleasure to read。 。。。more

Broken readers heart。。。 Genre: #YA #Romance #Fantasy My rating: 2，8 / 5 GR: 4，52 / 5 Right， let's talk about this book。 I loved “Caraval” trilogy by Stephanie Garber and as soon as I found out that she is writing separate book about Prince of Hearts （Jacks）， I got really excited。 He first appeared in “Legendary”， second book of the trilogy and by fact， my favorite， mainly， because of this character。 Unfortunately， I had really high expectations towards this book， and I was so disappointed how we Broken readers heart。。。 Genre: #YA #Romance #Fantasy My rating: 2，8 / 5 GR: 4，52 / 5 Right， let's talk about this book。 I loved “Caraval” trilogy by Stephanie Garber and as soon as I found out that she is writing separate book about Prince of Hearts （Jacks）， I got really excited。 He first appeared in “Legendary”， second book of the trilogy and by fact， my favorite， mainly， because of this character。 Unfortunately， I had really high expectations towards this book， and I was so disappointed how weak it turned out。 Main heroine Evangeline Fox was left heartbroken by a boy whom she loved and who chose to marry her stepsister。 She finds Prince of Hearts and strikes a deal with the Fate。 He will stop the wedding， but for what price？ Book is set in Valenda and The North， so pretty much the same setting as Caraval。 Is it necessary to read Caraval before reading this book？ Yes and No。 No， because this is a stand-alone book， brand new series， but set in the same world with some of the characters from Caraval。 Yes， because there are some flash backs from the past events， especially related to Donatella and Jacks， and the whole Fate thing。 As of Fates， in my opinion they are only briefly explained here。 What disappointed me？ A lot of things。 Authors bland language， I was bored reading this book。 Extremely Naïve main heroine， there was also one special thing about her， she had strawberry blond hair （for my international friends， it’s blond with pinkish shade）， it was accented way too much through the book。 Half of the book is literally a Brazilian Love drama， “I want him to love me"， "It's magic， he doesn’t truly love me” etc。 And to top it all up – Jacks， I didn’t feel that it was the same character from the Caraval， because there， author has created special atmosphere about him， he was heartless， bad。 Here though， there is pretense of this all， but it’s just an Echo of that loved by me character。 Plot itself。。。 It’s all about love， loads of weird stuff in the middle， 90% of things were predictable。 Only towards the end， were told about some magical place， that hides something， which raises some curiosity。 Here， I should be saying good things about this book。。。 To be fair， it just didn’t turn out to be my cup of tea。 But for those of you who love romance books， this might be the thing。 Thank you Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for provided ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

Once again Stephanie Garber has given us an utterly captivating book with such rich description it feels like you’re part of the story and I loved every single page。I CAN’T WAIT FOR IT TO BE RELEASED SO I CAN TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT IT。JACKS。 EVANGELINE。 MAGIC。 MYSTERY。 BETRAYALS。 SEXUAL TENSION。 （That one scene — oh my god）NICKNAME / PET NAME。All of it is just so 。。。 *chef’s kiss*I need the next book。 Right。 Now。Thank you to the publisher for kindly sending me a copy。

Thanks to the publisher for my gifted copy！ This was a light fantasy read and was really enjoyable and easy to read。At times the characters/writing felt quite immature but I really enjoyed the story。I loved the range of personalities in this book and the world building was great！ Top marks for sexual tension too！
